The rugby season has only just finished but preparations for next season have already started at Manchester Rugby Club.

As a thriving club with three senior mens’ teams, a Ladies team and boys & girls’ teams from Under 6 through to Under 16, the pitches at Grove Park are certainly in demand. Although the close season allows the grass time to recover, a little help is always necessary. The Cheadle Hulme based community club is therefore grateful for the donations which have enabled a ‘vertidrainer’ to be sourced to help with the land drainage.

Major sponsors of this initiative were:

  • Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund
  • Stockport Council Area Flexibility Fund

In conjunction with this, the funding for the land drainage was provided by:

  • Tesco Bags of Help Programme

The purpose of verti-draining is to allow oxygen into the root system of the grass and to provide a conduit for surface water to drain away via the recently improved land drainage. Holes are punched into the pitch surface at depths up to 150mm with a roller following behind to smooth the surface and make it playable.

The machinery bought through this funding will enable the Club to play more games on during the season and to improve the grounds for the fifteen or so teams that the club fields most weekends, from Minis (Under 6 to Under 11s), to Juniors (Under 12 to Under 16s) as well, of course, as the Men and Ladies XVs.

The Club are also pleased that the projects have improved the areas used by a local running club as well as improving the drainage on the public footpath that is on the perimeter of the grounds.
