Widnes RUFC U11’s vs Manchester RUFC U11’s – Sunday 12th Sept 2010 ko 11am.
First game of the season (I know that, because it was raining) against a team that was very strong last season.
If we aggregate the scores from the various ‘halves’ that we played, the final score was 3-3. Great performance from the guys – 16 turned up, what a great turn out.
The game could probably best be described as a ‘forwards heaven’. Lots of scrums, rucking and mauling – not a lot of getting the ball down the line, but the pitch was very narrow so didn’t lend itself to a running game.
In the scrum we won all of our ball, and a good number against the head – we got a real shove on and pushed Widnes clean off the ball on a number of occasions. All the forwards stepped up with great performances, Ciaran scored a typical Ciaran try, and Max gave Luke a helping ‘shove’ over the line for our last score. Tom scored an opportunistic try – but all of our scores came because our forwards were winning the ball, driving over (we need to watch the coming in from the side at rucks) and keeping up with play.
The backs supported well with tackling, and we even managed a couple of strategic kicks to touch which were great because they relieved pressure and weren’t just aimless kicks which gave possession away.
Overall a great start against a tough team.
