The Squad: James, Arlo, Tom, George, Frank (The Terminator), Hudson (Jet), Will, Bailey, Freddie (The Dancing Dragon)
A few short weeks ago many of these players were fresh, inexperienced and uncertain of the rules of the game. Their progress has been rapid and they are swiftly growing into battle hardened veterans. With an unbeaten record to defend, would the boys be able to extend their run to three out of three?
Winnington Park were able to field three teams of U7's and in turn each one took on our boys! With only minutes between games and some tired legs, Coaches Will and Scott were nervous that we might run out of steam...they had no cause to worry....!
Game One
The first game saw Manchester up against strong opposition, but coming through victorious thanks to scoring five tries despite the organization of the opposing defence. The Terminator and The Jet scored all five tries between them with some typically scorching runs from The Jet and superb positional play from The Terminator. The team gelled well with some superb tagging, notably from Arlo and Tom. Equally impressive was some cracking support play and individual running from James and George.
Game Two
There is a confidence coursing through the team at the moment and game two brought another win, this time with seven tries scored. Once again The Terminator was in the thick of the action both when finishing at the opposing line or with his jinking runs, slicing the opposition apart. He finished the game with a further four tries. Will's demonstration of speed left the opposition floundering in his wake as he broke through to score. Relative new-boy James continued his good progress with an impressive tally of two tries, finding another gear to race through the defence and complete the scoring. But this team is not all about attacking play; some great focus and concentration by Tom and George produced some more ferocious tagging to restrict the chances for Winnington to break through the Manchester lines.
Game Three
By now the team's confidence had grown further and the final game saw another seven tries for Manchester! The watching spectators were privileged to see some fabulous running, notably from Bailey, Will and Arlo. The Dancing Dragon was in his element, swerving and weaving his way through in trademark fashion, the opposition players spinning with dizziness as they tried to track him! A fine all round performance from Arlo was almost capped with a try - although he crossed the try line twice he was robbed of a try on both occasions as the ball slipped from his grasp! With a changed line up the tries this time were spread more evenly through the team, George, Will and The Dancing Dragon each scored two with Bailey scoring one!
The team pulled together superbly today and Coaches Will and Scott were pleased to see some fantastic individual play. Most impressive however was the overall team effort both in attack and defensively!
A special mention also for Max who, despite being too young to play, turned up to train and support his team! He is looking good and will be an excellent addition to the matchday squad next season.
This week’s 'Star of the Week' was a very tough decision as so many players were worthy of the prize. However, one boy stood out however for his overall focus and concentration which he channeled into a tremendous display of tagging...well done Tom!
