Well, the day dawned an hour early as the clocks went forward but we all made it to the right place at the right time – even the somewhat dehydrated coaches – their first order of the day being sending Suzanne to get a cuppa!!!
The first game kicked off with both sides weighing up the opposition as Widnes have also had a very successful season. Parents were also looking at the opposition as some of the Widnes lads were taller than some of the parents – well, me anyway!!
Manchester soon started to dominate and tries started to come in. Manchester maintained the upper hand despite consistent pressure from Widnes. There was not much opportunity to get the ball out and plenty of penalties and scrums were awarded which slowed the pace of the game. Manchester applied good pressure in the scrum despite the weight advantage to Widnes.
Widnes – 1 4 – Manchester
By this stage the teams had a better measure of each other and Widnes applied more pressure. Both teams fought hard with penalties being awarded to both sides for high tackles and other misdemeanours. The ball was often stuck and was “not going nowhere”. This meant the game was a slow one but Manchester were able to come out on top.
Widnes – 0 2 – Manchester
Manchester probably eased up a bit plus a few players had to rest due to injuries. Widnes managed to get the ball out responding well to imminent tackles from Manchester.
Widnes – 2 1- Manchester
In the final game Widnes still managed to get the ball out but Manchester kept up the tackles and frustrated the oppositions’ attempts to get tries. There were some good runs by Manchester players resulting in getting the ball up to near the line.
Widnes – 1 2- Manchester
Overall Manchester played well in a hard physical confrontation. They were not intimidated by the size of the opposition and the physicality of the game. We had some great runs with our players not being scared of running straight at some big lads. Well done!
I am sure all the boys enjoyed a hot soak later that day to ease their bumps and bruises – including the coaches who looked as if they also needed a little TLC after a tough night on Saturday!!
