Well it seemed straightforward enough...all Manchester/Sandbach had to do was to win their last game and they would be champions.
There were one or two banana skins to negotiate though:
- we had a day long 10s tournament at Caldy the day before
- Um, the game was Away, at Preston Grasshoppers.
- Er, a bonus point was also needed.
- And, oh yes, we needed to win by at least 28 points to overhaul the long term league leaders Liverpool St Helens.
Well we needn’t have worried. The best squad turn out of the season showed the girls commitment, despite a tough previous day when the team had progressed all the way to the Final of the North of England 10s.
The girls were certainly fired up for this match and Hoppers simply could not cope with the visitors’ determination and skill as Manchester chased the points difference that they needed.
With quarter of an hour gone, the needed points had already been chalked up at 30-0. Five minutes later the coaches and referee accepted Hopper’s request to let the result stand at that point (40-0, eight tries) and Manchester were Champions!
