After the monsoon conditions of Friday and Saturday, Sunday’s fixture had to be switched to Caldy RFC due to the waterlogged pitches at Tyldesley. Caldy were excellent hosts and were able to offer facilities at very short notice for both of the girls’ age groups as well as the Senior Womens XV.
Manchester again provided the core of the Cheshire team but this time they almost failed to provide the captain. After an extended trip via Tyldesley RFC (oops!), Rebecca Scholes fortunately still arrived just in time to take on that role.
This time, Cheshire were not as generous to their opponents as they have been in other matches this season. In fact Lancashire were restricted to a lead of just one score before the Cheshire girls came back at them. At half time, Cheshire were in the unusual position of being in the lead - the difference being that Becky had converted her own try to turn her side around 7-5 up.
The girls were able to put some distance between the teams early in the second half and at 12-5 started to play some good rugby. This led to the highlight of the match as Emily Houghton confidently and skilfully took a high ball, sprinting towards the line to score a fantastic try to put Cheshire in charge at 17-5.
Lancashire were not finished though and continued to press, closing the gap to 17-12 to set up a tense finish.
Cheshire held on though, and the win was no less than the girls deserved after some excellent performances in this season’s county campaign.
