Manchester arrived with just eight players while Tyldesley had a far larger match day squad to call on. To give all the girls that were there the chance of a game, Tyldesley offered to lend a couple of players so that a 10s match could be played. Manchester were happy to go along with that, although maybe the loaned players were not quite as happy as it turned out!
Manchester’s eight then spent the game chasing, tackling and harrying their hosts, but on a full pitch a ten-man commitment was needed and having arrived with such a small squad, Manchester were really disadvantaged.
Things got worse when North of England’s Izzy Worsley suffered an injury, leaving Manchester with no option but to call on a third loaned player to supplement the side.
Breakaway tries were the story of the day as Manchester’s cover was exposed. Although the girls came close to scoring, the 34-0 defeat reflected the lack of numbers rather than the girls’ ability or effort. The encouragement of the coaches kept the girls going to the end as they dug in against the odds.
It was good news to hear after the game that Jess Davids can now return to training and we hope that Casey Thompson will soon be back to fitness after her injury at the Divisional trials.
