Some determined play by both sides saw Colwyn Bay being more often rewarded with a score than Manchester! Over a 60 minute match however, it could not be said that either side were leaking tries. The scoreline was certainly not down to a lack of effort, and the ability of several of the Manchester/Northwich girls looks likely to be noticed in the Cheshire trials next weekend.
As usual, Jess Johnson, chosen as Manchester’s captain, was excellent in both attack and defence, leading well by example as we expected. Ellie Davidson, now playing for the U15s having graduated from the younger boys’ teams, made a nuisance of herself at scrum half, harrying her opposite number and clearing the ball efficiently from the breakdown.
Also catching the eye was Casey Thompson who caused no end of problems for the Colwyn Bay defence with some storming runs towards their line. Against many teams her contribution would have been rewarded with a hat full of tries.
All in all, this was a good performance from Manchester and our friends at Preston Grasshoppers whose efforts to make the long journey to North Wales to support our early season friendly was much appreciated.
