Tough Opener for Fledgling County Squad

With this match in doubt due to player availability right up to the weekend, Cheshire were always going to face a daunting task but bravely faced up to the challenge at Sandbach RUFC.

Cheshire RFU are very grateful to North Midlands RFU for their cooperation and understanding which allowed this game to go ahead.

With a very limited pool of players caused by various circumstances, the players provided by Glossop, Manchester, Northwich and Wirral showed great spirit and sportsmanship in representing their County. The far more experienced visitors made life difficult for their hosts on the scoreboard, whilst at the same time being prepared to loan players from their large travelling squad to allow Cheshire to play this game.

Some good performances by individual players were not good enough to match the teamwork and experience which the North Midlands girls showed however. The visitors’ pack were well organised in loose play as well as the set pieces, providing every opportunity for their backs to exploit the wide open spaces. This made for a very tiring game for Cheshire who were forced to defend constantly.

This side will develop however as the newer players gain experience playing in the North West League, whilst the more experienced players continue to encourage their team mates and play by example.

The U15s can take confidence from the impressive performance and result of the Cheshire U18 Girls on the neighbouring pitch, which shows just how well the Cheshire clubs can develop their players. The clubs are proud to have such keen and committed players to work with and develop, and look forward to the support of the Cheshire RFU in their efforts.
