Fail to Prepare...

A team weakened by Divisional call-ups but strengthened by two loaned players took time to settle against a settled Barnsley side. With Libby Finn, Jess Johnson and Izzy Worsley on North of England duty, we were very grateful to Liverpool St Helens for loaning us Saffi Clay and Molly Morrissey.

Casey Thompson was asked to captain the side and she bravely did so, despite nursing an injured thumb which had made her a doubtful starter. This was typical of her commitment throughout this season and her example made her a natural choice to be captain. Jess Davids was also welcomed back to fitness, making herself available for the first time for several months. Ellie Davidson and Amy Gorman made up the core of the team who arrived at Sandbach RUFC awaiting the arrival of the Glossop girls and coach, who were to make up the squad for the day.

Unfortunately the Glossop contingent were delayed, and with less than 15 minutes to go to kick off, a warm up was all that was possible. The team needed a training session together after several weeks’ break, especially with the introduction of the LSH players that afternoon.

Rather than delaying kick off, the referee and coaches agreed to play the match over three periods. Manchester neatly(!) conceded two tries in each, scoring a consolation try in the last period through our two guests. Molly got the Manchester try and a surprised Saffi was asked to convert, which we are pleased to say she did successfully!

The match finished with a 40-7 to win for the Barnsley girls. As a team, our visitors certainly deserved this result - as individuals however, Manchester (and guests!) can be satisfied with their own performances.
