In greasy muddy conditions and with a strong wind limiting the possibilities this game was always going to be short on flowing rugby, and so it proved

Nevertheless all in all it was a satisfactory performance from MRFC Junior Colts because the pitch certainly had the effect of levelling the abilities of the two teams.
A somewhat complacent lacklustre Manchester side eventually showed a good deal of determination in keeping a very enthusiastic Liverpool Collegiate Team scoreless and ran in 4 tries themselves.

With Manchester having a strong squad, resting half a dozen players for the Schools Daily Mail Cup should perhaps not have affected this match very much. However with quick clean ball being in short supply the Manchester backs looked somewhat flat and seemed to lack confidence at times. The pack were decidly less cohesive than usual and lacked their customary go forward in the loose or from the lineout or maul.
The coaches will be looking for a much better performance in the second round vs Sedgley Park
Having said it was a solid performance all round and the result never really looked in doubt! A win is a always a win!

Collegiate's pack impressed in their retention of ball and sheer determination, with their performance perhaps deserving at least a consolation score. Their team, never dispirited, threatened the Manchester try line on several occasions in the second half and they made several good goal-line stands themselves limiting the final score.

The home team coaches were in fact delighted with being able to field a full team for only the second time this season. Even more remarkable was that they even had two players on the bench!
Their players should take great heart from this close game with two of Manchester's tries coming from mid-field breakaways with uncharacturistic lazy tackling leading to an extra ten points on the scorecard.
If this team commit properly to each other and recruit half a dozen more good players, improve their handling behind the scrum, they will give a very good account of themselves in ANY league next season.
Many thanks for the game and the hospitality Collegiate.
