About the team

At Manchester Rugby Club we are proud to be part of the “Kids First” Rugby philosophy. The emphasis is on making sure the kids have fun learning rugby, and their safety and enjoyment always come first.

New players are always extremely welcome to join this friendly and progressive club that is run for its members, by its members. At this age group its boys only but we do have a thriving girls team also.

We meet on Sunday mornings at 10:30 and play games home and away, Thursday night is training and we start at 18.00 and finish for 19.30. Training officially starts on the 1st September 2026. Please call the U15 coaches for more information.

We continue to meet up on Thursday evenings at 18.30-19.30 throughout summer for a fun game of touch, this is a great way of getting involved before the season starts. We also have a fitness session on Sunday morning at 10.00 so just pop down to meet the team.

  • To be eligible for U15’s your son must be 14 years old on 1st September 2026 (i.e. Year 10 at school)
  • Gum shields are mandatory. Please ask if you need some advice about mouth guards
  • At this age we play Contact Rugby which means that we are tackling rucking, mauling and competing at scrums. All activities are age-appropriate and we can talk you through what this means at this age group.
  • Please bring a drink (water please) and a snack for your child

This is our third season as a mixed team (Barbarians) the two local clubs with have collaborated with are , Didsbury TOC and Old Bedians. This will obviously give us a larger squad, something we all struggled with the last few seasons, it will also make selection more competitive and subsequently the team more competitive. We are all very excited about the season ahead!

We would ask that parents:
- Ensure that there is an adult present who is responsible for their child during the sessions.
- Respect the spirit of rugby with positive encouragement for ALL teams and absolutely no criticism of refereeing decisions and no coaching from the touch line.

The core skills of Rugby don't change: PASSING, CATCHING, TACKLING, RUNNING and EVASION and we develop these skills through enjoyable games.

Our players have the freedom to play without the fear of making mistakes, to express themselves using their imagination and to be creative - in other words: be themselves!

We have a squad of mixed ability and stature: they all have their own strengths and areas to work on. The players naturally grow and develop at different rates and we try to manage carefully the needs of both the individual and the team in terms of overall development.

The boys develop close friendships and we encourage them to help each other out because learning from your teammates is a great way to learn.

We operate a rotation policy so all of our players are given equal game time and the teams we field are a mix of abilities. There is no streaming of players into 1st/2nd teams etc.

Child Protection – We adhere to the RFU’s Safeguarding Guidelines. All our coaches are RFU qualified and hold enhanced DBS (criminal records) checks.

Concussion – any player that receives a knock to the head will be immediately removed from play.
We will assess the player and we will, if necessary, recommend that the player is taken for further assessment by a medical professional.

We keep an eye on the weather because cold and wet children make unhappy rugby players! Please bring appropriate clothing for the conditions. Please be aware if it gets very cold and/or wet we may stop the session early
