Tiring Tigers picked off by Hungry Hawks

Tiring Tigers picked off by Hungry Hawks

Ian Roberts15 Nov 2010 - 21:19

After a really strong first encounter, the larger Hawk Squad from Trafford used their superior numbers to win the day.

Game 1 saw the nine man Tiger team taking on a much bigger Trafford team on the newly painted Brook pitch. The Hawks Captain won the toss and decided to take the attack to the Tigers. From the off, they were quick to burst the Tigers line and head over for the first try of the day. From the restart, the Tigers threw the ball around, making excellent ground and pushing forward through the Hawks defence. Eddie was in the thick of it, going over in the corner to level the score. Trafford were straight back at the Tigers with great running and excellent support play reclaiming the Hawks the lead. This time it was William's turn to jinx his way round the Trafford defence to tie the game at 2-2 going in at half time. The second half was started by the Tigers and from the restart they were all fired up. The ball went through the hands effortlessly and who was there to pile over for his first try of the season, but Iron Man himself. Well done to Ollie, the first of many more to come. The Hawks drove forward, but there was no way through and from the turnover ball, Josh was unleashed by a precision pass from Fin to go over for his first of the day. Though the Hawks fought bravely back, there was a sting in the tail when Eddie ran on to a Mat pass to seal the game, 5-3 to Manchester.

Game 2 saw Trafford change their full team with seven new players taking to the field. Once more they won the toss and took the game to Manchester. The Tigers were alert to the dangers and tagged doggedly throughout these early exchanges securing the turn over and mounting an attack of their own. This match saw Josh really turn on the style and it was great to see him enjoying his rugby and bringing his skills to the front. even so, it was the hawks who went into the break on top, 3-2 to the visitors. The second half brought Eddie and Mat more into the game and they both went over for a try a piece after great linkage across the back line. Ill discipline in tagging when off side was to be the undoing of the Tigers in this game and though Josh ran in a brace in the second half to score 4 in total, the Hawks took the spoils having taken advantage of the penalties conceded by the eager Tiger attacks, ending the match victorious at, 7-5.

Game 3 gave the Hawks the chance to swap and change throughout so that their players could stay as fresh as possible. There was no chance for the Tigers though and they fought bravely with the small squad they had. The Hawks again won the toss and elected to take the game to the Tigers. Quick off the blocks, they were soon pressing at the Tigers try line. Valiant though the defence was, they could not hold the tide of Hungry Hawks, pecking at the stout defenders and Trafford went over for their first of the match. Try as they did, the Tigers were not able to break the Hawks defence and the ball was turned over to the Hawks who broke clear of the Tigers to go 2 up inside the first few minutes of play. From the restart, Luke went on a mezmorising run and grabbed one back for the Tigers just before the break, going in 1-2 at half time. The second half so the Hawks take full advantage of the tiring Tiger and they found the space to score a further 3 tries to the Tigers 2 in reply. A second try of the match for Luke and Will getting his second of the day.

Three good games of rugby with Trafford the deserving winners on the day. The Tigers can take great heart from their superb teamwork, courage and dedication in the face of superior squad numbers coming from the Hawks. A couple more players coming into the side will make all the difference, with Bill, Fin and Louis now fully fledged Tigers, things can only get even better.

Today's heroic Tigers were (tries in brackets): Josh(5), Eddie(3), Will(2), Luke(2), Ollie(1), Mat(1), Myles, Bill and Fin. Well done to one and all. See you all next week for training.
